CBAM cost preview

Live ETS price: €78.73/t CO₂. Sample: 1 tonne of CN 7220 at default factors costs ~€16.97 in CBAM certificates today.

Direct emissions
1.88 t CO₂/t
Indirect emissions
0.275 t CO₂/t
CBAM cost (1000 t shipment)
€16,966
How is this calculated?

CBAM certificate cost = embedded emissions × ETS price × (1 − free-allocation factor) × phase-in markup.

Phase-in 2026: 10% of full certificate cost. Free allocation assumed 0% in this preview.

Methodology guide -- CN 7220 (stainless flat-rolled, <600mm)

Narrow stainless strip is a niche but high-value CBAM import category. The methodology mirrors CN 7219 -- same EAF route, same alloy considerations -- with the added complexity that narrow strip producers often run multiple grades on the same line, requiring careful product allocation.

Step 1 -- request grade-specific verified data. Different stainless grades (304, 316, 430, etc.) carry different alloy contents and therefore different emissions. Suppliers may report a single average; ask for grade-specific allocation if your import mix is concentrated.

Step 2 -- handle multi-grade allocation. Reg. 2025/2621 Article 7 requires physical allocation when a single line produces multiple products. A mill running 60% 304 / 40% 316 should report grade-specific emissions or a defensible weighted average.

Step 3 -- check upstream alloy supply chain. Some Asian mills source ferronickel from Indonesia / Philippines, where carbon intensity is high. Verified data should disclose the upstream alloy emissions; under-disclosure is a verification failure.

Frequently asked questions

What is CN 7220?
Stainless steel flat-rolled product, less than 600mm wide. Used in precision strip applications -- razor blades, springs, electronics, sensors. Lower-volume than CN 7219.
Is verified data more important for CN 7220?
Yes -- the EU default is calibrated to carbon steel, not stainless. Stainless verified data typically shows higher emissions due to alloy content. Use verified data for accuracy.
Where does CN 7220 import from?
China dominates (~88kt/yr); Taiwan and South Korea are smaller sources. The market is concentrated in narrow strip for industrial applications.
